You’ll see St. Mary’s Square with the city hall (Rathaus) and the famous Glockenspiel chimes, the Viktualienmarkt and Dallmayer’s delicatessen store. Our hotel is not in Venice, but in Abano Terme, one of the famous spa towns in the area of the Euganean Hills: www.alexanderpalace.it This has a great deal of advantages, not least of all that Venice becomes reachable from there by a comfortable train ride.
Upon arrival, you may decide to refresh yourself in the hotel pool filled with thermal water before you sit down for dinner in the hotel restaurant. Dinner is included today.
Day 9 - Saturday December 4, 2010 Venice – a dream! Probably the most unusual city in the world, and pe rhaps also the most beautiful one. We will be taking a train that will take us right into the heart of the city. For the balance of the day you’ll be either walking – or use the local transport buses, which in Venice take the shape of boats, the so-called “vaporetti”. We have included a day ticket for public transportation in the tour price.
Our own English speaking loca l guide will meet us at the railway station, and take us around for the better part of the morning. Cristina will show you some things you have already heard of – like St. Mark’s Square with the campanile and the beautiful cathedral; the iconic Rialto bridge across the Canal Grande; or the Bridge of Sighs, leading to the city prison. But also lesser known points of interest will be included, e.g. the Jewish quarters, from which the word ghetto emerged, or the romantic fish market.
From about 12:00 noon you’ll have plenty of time to expl ore Venice and its surroundings on your own, and the day pass will make it easy to move around: How about visiting the unique cemetery island of San Michele, continuing on to the island of Murano known for their beautiful and quite affordable glass blown products. Ho w about crossing over to the island of Lido, walk on the beach and look out over the Mediterranean Sea. Or how about checking out a carnival mask maker in his/her workshop, and take home one of these fanciful souvenirs. We will have lots of suggestions ready for you.
Return to your hotel by train and bus at about 10:00pm. No organised dinner tonight.
Day 10 - Sunday December 5, 2010 Return to Austria. We plan on a lunch break in the city of Villach [284km] and time permitting a visit to the market in Klagenfurt before travelling on to your hotel in the Salzburg area. It is in the village of Faistenau [457km]: www.fischernet.net. Dinner is included tonight.
Day 11 - Monday Dece mber 6, 2010 Today is devoted to Salzburg, the beautiful Austrian city so well known in the USA by the movie “The Sound of Music”. It is true that the city served as a backdrop to the film, but it is also famous because Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born t here, and because it is home to one of the most prestigious festivals of classical music in the world.
Uli will walk you around the old town for a good hour, taking you into the magnificent cathedral, through the famous cemetery (a cardboard model of which was used in the movie) and to Mozart’s birthplace in the busy Getreidegasse, before you have time to explore the city some more on your own. Perhaps you’d like to go up the magnificent fortress that towers over this charming place:
Explore this extraordinary city and its tasteful Christmas market some more on your own before we return to our hotel. No organized dinner today
Day 12 - Tuesday December 7, 2010 Leave this morning to motor to Rothenburg o. T. [385km]. We have quite a few hours to visit this jewel of a city: quaint alleys, century-old buildings, a wall all around... it's like stepping into a fairy tale. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes today - this is cobble-stone day! Uli will take you on a walk that will include a stroll high up along the city wall.
You’ll also see the old castle area and catch a romantic view of the lovely Tauber river valley. And we’ll take you into the church and will show you the Holy Blood altar, one of the most remarkable and wonderful pieces of woodcarving in the land. And yes – there is also a cute Christmas Market.
We will overnight in the small village of Schollbrunn [499km] where we know an excellent guesthouse with excellent food: www.sonne-schollbru nn.de
Tonight, a grand farewell dinner will unfold at our hotel. Local food will be served, seasoned with various outstanding artistic contributions by various artists – all members of the group…

Your permanent Tour Guide will be U lrich "Uli" Buschmann, who was born and raised in Germany, but in his early teens started to fall in love with English as a foreign language, and the people who speak it… the British first, then a little later the Americans. Half way through university he decided not to become an English teacher, as originally planned, but take his Master's degree instead and become a mediator between cultures. He is married to an "English Rose" from around Cambridge, Great Britain.
